Our client Novasense created the smart sheet sensor. A soft flexible capacitive sensor for medical applications. Our team was tasked with creating a test jig for applying pressure and shear force on the smart sheet. My role in this project was the main mechanical designer.
The following requirements were set by our client for the mechanical design, and all were met:
Expandable design
Exert a 200 mmHg equivalent force downwards
X and Y axis move in the same plane
X and Y axis can move under 200 mmHg under applied pressure
Pressure can be applied over a 20 x 20 cm area
Pressure applicator (indenture) is interchangeable
The mechanical CAD design was done in onshape and intentionally has a similar BOM to a 3D printer.
The XY gantry was modelled after the coreXY design. It allows for both motors to contribute to movement of both axis while also being off axis. This allows for a much lighter payload at the end effector.
load cell enclosure
The pictured mechanism was devised for allowing for easily swapping out toolheads to allow for different pressure patterns to be applied to the smart sheet.-
